UN Report Finds Routine Abuse of Afghan Detainees

U.N. Finds ‘Systematic’ Torture in Afghanistan

After 10 years of war we still haven't made enough progress democratizing our Afghan "allies" to have stopped them from torturing prisoners.

Of course, it might have helped if we had set a better example ourselves.

Baseball and War

Barry Bonds Hits 73rd Home Run, October 7, 2001

US Strikes Begin On Afghanistan, October 7, 2001

10 years ago today I was in Pac Bell Park with my friend Alan Kelly watching Barry Bonds hit home run #73. Just before the ballgame started, I heard NPR news announce that we had started bombing the Taliban.

Through corruption, utter mismanagement and terrible PR, Bonds’ glory was far too short and the Afghan War’s length far too long.

Baseball and war: do they really have anything in common? Not really. Except that you can’t trust the stats on either one, and all the average person wants to see is the ones you’re rooting for to make it home safely.

Be Careful about that "Reply All" Button...

If the PR exec who called Jenny Lawson (“The Bloggess”) a “fucking bitch” hurries, maybe he can make today’s submission deadline for the PR Week awards.

Read the whole story… this agency confounds error after error after error…

Might need to add 1 to those unemployment numbers that came out today…

"I can't even make this shit up."

Terra Naomi Has a Sublime Voice

Terra Naomi's CD To Know I'm OK arrived today, signed by her. It's pure magic... she's my favorite indie singer/songwriter to come along since Feist. I heard an online concert of her recently and she did a cover of "Bridge Over Troubled Water," which takes guts, to say the least.

She nailed it.

I can't recommend her highly enough. Check out her website here:

Suicides in Greece Up by 40%

Lots of depressing news today. In short, the world economy is acting like a patient on an episode of House.

The problem: this show has no Dr. House to figure it all out at the last minute.
